I’m back… after a long break from Blogging… Why was I gone so long I hear you asking? Well I will outline just that has changed and what caused my lack of posting here on ThatBlogger…
As some of you may know I was working for a local marketing agency close to where I live. After working there for about 4 years I decided it was time to take the plunge and setup my own marketing company.
This wouldn’t be my first company, as I had already been running a first aid training company on the side to my normal job, so had already got the basics of business.
So in September 2014 I handed in my notice, got an office at a new enterprise park near where I live and started on my own. Running the two companies became very time-consuming working on client projects and sorting all the tax and accounts meant that I lost the free time I had to blog. 10 months later I am still going having secured enough work to keep me going. You can check out my company website here. Let me know in the comments what you think!
Having just told you I have started my own company, I also now have another job!
For a long time now I have been trying to work my way up and gain experience with the view to join the Ambulance Service here in the UK. After years of doing just that, I found myself applying for jobs at my local NHS Trust not really thinking much about it other than filling in the application form as I had been doing for months before. However one day after coming back into the office after a meeting, to my surprise I had been asked to attend an assessment day for a chance to be selected to work in my dream job. I went to the assessment day thinking it was worth a go and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work but the closer it got to that day the more I wanted it.
About a week after passing all the assessment tests and interview I was waiting to see if I had been selected for a space of 200 from a list of 3000 people. Then that call came! I had got that job!
A few months on with the paperwork coming along I am not just waiting for my course to start in July. Wait… What about my companies…? Well I am still going to run those companies. Just on more of a part-time basis.
New Blog Theme
Now I am back blogging I thought it was about time I updated the ThatBlogger theme. I took a few hours our of working on client projects to quickly code up a new theme. Which is the theme you are seeing now! Let me know in the comments that you think about it?
Yep… It’s that time of year when people start to go away on their summer holidays! That is exactly what me and my girlfriend are doing. On Tuesday next week (10 June) we are off to Mexico for 2 weeks so the blogging well slow down slightly while I am away but I will make sure I upload some photo blogs so you guys can see what I am up too!
So What Now?…
I am going to try to blog now as much as I can and keep you updated with the goings on in my life, code, reviews and general day-to-day stuff.
If anyone has anything they would like to send me for review or anything please let me know via the contact page.
Over the past few days I have been fining blogging hard. Not the actual technical side of blogging more the coming up with topics to write about…
Some of you may well know I am a big fan of John Saddington a former owner of 8BIT and WPDaily who I worked with when I contributed to WPDaily. His expertise and advice has gotten me to this point today and have allowed me to keep blogging for nearly a year now!
People can’t lie to you, blogging is hard work – getting readers and keeping readers isn’t easy. However one of John’s posts really helped me out. In it John said blog at least 3 times a week, to gain more traffic to your blog or website. My aim is to hit 250 unique visits per day. Hopefully with a bit of work I can achieve this target.
Totally random post but its one down for this week!
2014 is just around the corner so I thought I would share some goals I have set myself for the next year!
Changes To That Blogger
So first things first, my plans for That Blogger – I originally set this blog up as a way to focus on WordPress and web development articles but now with 2014 I have decided to turn it into more of a personal blog, while at the same time keeping the tips and code snippets coming.
For those of you who don’t know, I’m not only a programmer but also a scuba diving professional and a photographer. Therefore That Blogger could become a large source of all sorts of information.
Extending My Diving Professional Status
In very early 2014 I plan on doing the Scuba Instructor Exam to allow me to become a fully qualified Diving Instructor. Which could be interesting I am not sure if I will be doing it in the UK or Abroad yet. Keep an eye out for updated on that…
My Health & Fitness
I must set this goal every year and like others I’m sure, it never really fully happens. Been young I have been getting away with eating whatever I want, whenever I want. However in the long run I know it’s all going to come crashing down so eating healthy is going to be a big part of new year… but only time will tell on that one!
I’m sure 2014 will be full of other goals that pop-up over the year and I’m sure you’ll have your own goals. Whatever your goals are I wish you all the best in 2014!
John Saddington a former founder of 8BIT has a little project he started over at Kickstarter. Pressgram is an Instagram like application that will allow its users to take photos using there iOS device, add filters and publish them right to a WordPress website all while drinking a cup of coffee! While some people might think whats the point – I may as well just use Instagram? Well a few months ago now Instagram was purchased by Facebook and not long after that decided it would change its Terms of Service to allow itself to effectively sell your photos for profit without your permission and without paying you a penny. To sum all of that up in one sentence… Instagram owns your photos from the moment they hit there servers! This was when John decided this wasn’t right – photos uploaded should remain the property of the user who took and uploaded the photo. Allowing full creative control to that user. This was when Pressgram
Yet another surprise from 8BIT! After announcing the closure and sale of WP Daily a few months ago. 8BIT has now announced via its blog that it will be closing its doors for good.
In a blog post by John Saddington, John stated:
There’s a lot that I could say but it’s best if I keep it short and sweet – everything is in a great place relationally and life has changed the pace and direction for all of the partners.
As a result, we decided collectively and equally that it was time to go our separate ways. There’s no hidden agendas, no hard feelings, and certainly no conspiracy. As I mentioned before, besides death and taxes, change is guaranteed.
The 8BIT Support Forums will be open for another 30 days however once this is up the company will no longer offer support for their products – and most importantly their Standard Theme. Many questions are still out there – What will happen to the founders of 8BIT? We know one thing for sure, John Saddington has his eyes on the upcoming release of Pressgram. What will happen to Standard Theme? Will it just disappear down a hole? Who knows.
8BIT suggested looking at these two companies for new themes:
One thing is for sure, the closer of 8BIT and WP Daily was short and sweet, no gimmics and no looking back. I wish the guys over at 8BIT every success in the future.
What do you think about the sudden closure?
Blogging plays a big part of my day to day life. I gain knowledge, learn new tips and tricks and keep up with ever moving WordPress news. Well news in general really.
Because of this I wanted to share with you 6 blogs that I check nearly every day. Starting off with WPMU.
A WordPress news and tips blog ran side by side with the WPMU Premium network. Featuring +140 plugins and 160+ themes.
A blog ran by Manage WP, a WordPress management solution. This blog features tips on blogging, productivity, WordPress tips and tricks and more. Its also worth checking out there monthly theme and plugin posts.
Leaving Work Behind is owned by Tom Ewer, a freelance writer who writes for ManageWP and many more company’s. One thing I like most about his blog is that he publishes his monthy income from freelance writing. His story is also very interesting as he left his full time job to become a full time freelance blogger. Well worth a look if you are unsure on making the jump.
If your into technology, including gadgets like mobile phone, tech company’s, computers, websites… well anything tech. This is the blog for you!
This blog is a must if you are a freelancer in the creative industry at all. This blog provides vital information on the world of freelance including tips and trick and everything in between!
Torque took over from WP Daily a few weeks ago now – when it was WP Daily I used to browse the blog every day and even contributed to the content been posted. However 8BIT who were the former owners of WP Daily decided to call it a day and sell WP Daily. Now it has been purchased by WP Engine I do still check this blog but not as often as I used to. Sad really.
And that’s my 6 blogs I check daily. Do you have blogs that you check often? I’d love to hear them in the comments.
