My Goals for 2014

2014 is just around the corner so I thought I would share some goals I have set myself for the next year!

Changes To That Blogger

So first things first, my plans for That Blogger – I originally set this blog up as a way to focus on WordPress and web development articles but now with 2014 I have decided to turn it into more of a personal blog, while at the same time keeping the tips and code snippets coming.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m not only a programmer but also a scuba diving professional and a photographer. Therefore That Blogger could become a large source of all sorts of information.

Extending My Diving Professional Status

In very early 2014 I plan on doing the Scuba Instructor Exam to allow me to become a fully qualified Diving Instructor. Which could be interesting I am not sure if I will be doing it in the UK or Abroad yet. Keep an eye out for updated on that…

My Health & Fitness

I must set this goal every year and like others I’m sure, it never really fully happens. Been young I have been getting away with eating whatever I want, whenever I want. However in the long run I know it’s all going to come crashing down so eating healthy is going to be a big part of new year… but only time will tell on that one!

The Unknown

I’m sure 2014 will be full of other goals that pop-up over the year and I’m sure you’ll have your own goals. Whatever your goals are I wish you all the best in 2014!

301 Redirect to a New Domain

Every once in a while you might want to move your blog from one domain to another. This can get very messy if you don’t set-up a 301 redirect properly. By setting up a 301 redirect you keep all the SEO value and your readers are automatically sent to the page they are looking for, only on your new domain.

For example, if you go to http://oldsomain.com/page1 it will automatically send the reader to http://newdomain.com/page1.

Whats the code?

To get this to work simply go to your web hosting FTP or file manager and find the .htaccess file. Edit that file and replace its contents with the following:

# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.oldsite.com RewriteRule (.*)
http://www.newsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]
# END WordPress

Make sure your replace oldsite.com with your old domain name. And newsite.com to your new domain. Be sure not to edit any of the other code as this will affect the way the htaccess file will work.

Once you have done this, upload the .htaccess file to your web host and remove all old WordPress file and your done.
Just make sure you check that everything is working ok.

6 Blogs I Check Daily

Blogging plays a big part of my day to day life. I gain knowledge, learn new tips and tricks and keep up with ever moving WordPress news. Well news in general really.

Because of this I wanted to share with you 6 blogs that I check nearly every day. Starting off with WPMU.

WPMU

A WordPress news and tips blog ran side by side with the WPMU Premium network. Featuring +140 plugins and 160+ themes.

ManageWP

A blog ran by Manage WP, a WordPress management solution. This blog features tips on blogging, productivity, WordPress tips and tricks and more. Its also worth checking out there monthly theme and plugin posts.

Leaving Work Behind

Leaving Work Behind is owned by Tom Ewer, a freelance writer who writes for ManageWP and many more company’s. One thing I like most about his blog is that he publishes his monthy income from freelance writing. His story is also very interesting as he left his full time job to become a full time freelance blogger. Well worth a look if you are unsure on making the jump.

The Next Web

If your into technology, including gadgets like mobile phone, tech company’s, computers, websites… well anything tech. This is the blog for you!

Creative Boom

This blog is a must if you are a freelancer in the creative industry at all. This blog provides vital information on the world of freelance including tips and trick and everything in between!

WPDaily (now Torque)

Torque took over from WP Daily a few weeks ago now – when it was WP Daily I used to browse the blog every day and even contributed to the content been posted. However 8BIT who were the former owners of WP Daily decided to call it a day and sell WP Daily. Now it has been purchased by WP Engine I do still check this blog but not as often as I used to. Sad really.

And that’s my 6 blogs I check daily. Do you have blogs that you check often? I’d love to hear them in the comments.

Scuba Diving Adventure

For people who don’t know, I am into scuba diving in quite a big way. So much so a few weeks ago I decided it was time for a change. A big step in the diving adventure is the adventure into a pro diver. After researching around the internet and finding 2 countries that fell into my budget I forced myself to pick one of the 2 countries.

After looking around the internet for other people who had done the same. I just couldn’t find anything with the information about what it was like to actually do a divemaster course abroad. So this is where I thought – well if no one else has done it, I will.

That was when Dive Adventures was born. This blog is where I will be documenting my course from start to finish. Planning, travelling, doing the course, and after the course. Obviously while I am away this blog will not be getting much attention so why not follow me on my adventure across at Dive Adventures until I return!

By the way! I am not going for another month yet! I will still be posting until then – when I finally go I will make sure to put a post on here to make sure you all know.

Keep Blogging!
